The quick answer: if your hair is shedding a few months after starting a weight-loss jab, a simple three-step routine helps keep your scalp comfortable and your hair looking its best while the hair cycle settles: a scalp-preparing mask 1–2 times a week, a gentle scalp-focused wash 3–4 times a week, and a leave-in serum chosen for what your hair is doing – for example, Dixidox Forte Advance Plus morning and evening for 10 days, then once a day or 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks. Add gentle styling habits, eat enough protein, and give it at least 8–12 weeks before judging. A routine is cosmetic care: it does not change how your medicine works, so speak to your GP about anything medical.
When hair starts coming out in handfuls, the natural reaction is to buy everything at once – or to stop washing your hair altogether. Neither helps. In clinic I prefer a calm, consistent plan based on the SIMONE TRICHOLOGY usage protocols. This guide sets it out step by step, with a sample week, styling tips and optional extras by hair type. If you are new to the topic, start with our hub guide to weight-loss jabs and hair loss.
What a hair-care routine can and cannot do
Shedding linked to weight-loss jabs is usually a temporary shift in the hair cycle (telogen effluvium), triggered months earlier by rapid weight loss and eating less. Hairs that have already entered their resting phase will be released whatever you put on your scalp. What a good routine can do is:
- keep the scalp clean, comfortable and balanced while you go through a stressful phase;
- reduce breakage, so you lose fewer hairs to snapping on top of the shedding;
- help hair look fuller and denser as the new hairs come through;
- give you a structured plan, which many people find reassuring.
It works best alongside the basics in our guide to protein and iron for hair while losing weight.
Step 1: Prepare the scalp (1–2 times a week)
Before washing, apply Dermo Capillary Mask Activated Plus in micro-peel mode to a dry or slightly damp scalp. Massage for 1–2 minutes, leave for 3–5 minutes (2–3 minutes if your scalp is sensitive), rinse well and then shampoo. This gently renews the scalp surface so the rest of the routine works on a clean base. If your lengths feel dry, the same mask can be used in deep-repair mode on the lengths after shampooing.
Step 2: Wash gently but regularly (3–4 times a week)
Many people wash less when they are shedding, because they see more hair in the shower. But those hairs were already on their way out – washing only releases them sooner. A clean scalp is more comfortable, and regular washing makes it easier to see how your shedding is really changing.
- Alternate two shampoos: Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo Plus and Hair Nutrient Royal Jelly Shampoo Plus, 3–4 times a week.
- Massage, then wait: work the shampoo into the scalp for 1–2 minutes with your fingertips (not nails) and leave it on for 2–3 minutes before rinsing. See our guide to scalp massage.
- Lukewarm water: keep it at or below about 37 °C; very hot water can leave the scalp dry and irritated.
Like all SIMONE TRICHOLOGY shampoos, conditioners and masks, these use The biomimetic exosomes in the TFD System to help deliver their actives to the scalp. For more on choosing a shampoo, see our guide to the best shampoo for hair loss and, for women, hair loss shampoo for women.
Step 3: Choose the right leave-in serum

The leave-in step is where the routine is tailored. Apply it to a clean scalp that is dry or slightly damp, part the hair in sections, massage for 1–2 minutes until absorbed and do not rinse. Our serums use their own formulas, without exosomes, and are designed to work alongside the wash step. Our guide to scalp serums explains how they differ.
| What your hair is doing | Leave-in serum | Intensive phase | Then |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sudden, diffuse shedding 2–4 months after the weight started coming off | Dixidox Forte Advance Plus | Morning and evening for 10 days | Once a day or 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks |
| Very heavy shedding (“shock” option) | PROSCIENCE+ | Morning and evening for 10 days | Once a day or 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks |
| Gradual, all-over thinning | DNA Hairmax Pro Plus | Daily or 5 times a week for 8–12 weeks | 3 times a week |
| Thinning around the menopause | Royal Jelly Hair Activator Plus | Daily or 5 times a week for 8–12 weeks | 3 times a week |
| Pattern thinning at the crown, parting or temples | PROALOPEX+ (long-term base); AGA Cellular Therapy Plus as a complement, especially with an oily scalp | Daily or 5 times a week for 12 weeks (AGA Cellular Therapy Plus: 8–12 weeks) | 3 times a week, as part of a programme of around 11 months |
| Round bald patches – see your GP first | Science Antigen Therapy Plus | 3–5 times a week for 8–12 weeks, on the patches and around them | PROSCIENCE+ 1–2 times a week |
Men noticing receding temples or a thinner crown should also read GLP-1 medicines and male pattern hair loss. Bald patches are not typical of weight-loss shedding; read more about patchy hair loss before choosing a programme.
A sample week
This is how the first 10 days might look with Dixidox Forte Advance Plus. After day 10, keep the same washing pattern and use the serum once a day or 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks.
| Day | Prepare | Wash | Leave-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | – | Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo Plus | Morning and evening |
| Tuesday | – | – | Morning and evening |
| Wednesday | Dermo Capillary Mask (micro-peel) | Hair Nutrient Royal Jelly Shampoo Plus | Morning and evening |
| Thursday | – | – | Morning and evening |
| Friday | – | Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo Plus | Morning and evening |
| Saturday | – | – | Morning and evening |
| Sunday | Dermo Capillary Mask (micro-peel) | Hair Nutrient Royal Jelly Shampoo Plus | Morning and evening |
On wash days, apply the morning or evening serum after washing, once the scalp is dry or slightly damp.
Gentle styling habits
- Loosen up. Avoid tight ponytails, buns, braids and extensions, which pull on the hairline.
- Detangle carefully. Use a wide-tooth comb from the ends upwards, ideally with conditioner on the lengths.
- Pat, don’t rub. Blot wet hair with a soft towel or a microfibre wrap.
- Turn the heat down. Dry on a warm rather than hot setting and use straighteners and curling tongs sparingly.
- Pause big chemical changes. Leave bleaching, perms and relaxers until the shedding has settled.
- Don’t chase every hair. Counting hairs every day adds stress; compare photos every four weeks instead.
Our guide to why hair breaks has more on protecting the lengths.
Optional extras by hair type
These are not part of the core routine above, but some people like to add them for the look and feel of their lengths:
- Fine, flat hair: Volume Therapy Shampoo Plus can be swapped in occasionally for extra body at the roots.
- Coloured or highlighted hair: Hair Loss & Colors Shampoo Plus is a colour-friendly alternative wash.
- Dry or damaged lengths: Triple Action Conditioner Deep Repair Plus on the mid-lengths and ends, or Keratin DNA Therapy Plus as a leave-in for over-processed hair.
How long before you see a difference?
Give any programme at least 8–12 weeks. Shedding itself often begins to ease within a few months as your weight stabilises; visible fullness takes longer, because new hair grows only about a centimetre a month. Our Mounjaro hair loss timeline sets out what to expect month by month. If you are unsure which programme suits you, send three photos to our free online Hair Clinic or browse the Thinning Hair & Hair Loss Care range.
When to see your GP
Speak to your GP if shedding is very heavy or lasts more than six months, if you see bald patches or a widening parting, if your scalp is red, sore, scaly or scarred, or if you feel generally unwell, tired or cold. Patch-test any new leave-in product on a small area first, and stop using it if your scalp becomes red, itchy or sore. Never stop or change a weight-loss medicine because of your hair without talking to your prescriber.
Your questions answered
What is the best routine for hair shedding on Mounjaro?
A simple three-step routine: a scalp-preparing mask 1–2 times a week, a gentle scalp-focused wash 3–4 times a week and a leave-in serum chosen for what your hair is doing. Add gentle styling and enough protein, and give it at least 8–12 weeks.
Which shampoo should I use if my hair is shedding?
In our protocols, Hair Loss Prevention Shampoo Plus is alternated with Hair Nutrient Royal Jelly Shampoo Plus, 3–4 times a week. Massage into the scalp for 1–2 minutes, leave for 2–3 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water.
Should I wash my hair less when it is shedding?
No. The hairs you see in the shower were already on their way out; washing simply releases them a little sooner. Regular washing keeps the scalp clean and comfortable and makes it easier to judge whether shedding is really settling.
Which serum should I use for shedding after rapid weight loss?
For sudden, diffuse shedding a few months after the weight starts coming off, our protocols use Dixidox Forte Advance Plus morning and evening for 10 days, then once a day or 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks. For very heavy shedding, PROSCIENCE+ follows the same schedule.
How long should I follow the routine?
Follow the full intensive phase – 10 days plus 6–8 weeks for shedding programmes, or 8–12 weeks for thinning programmes – before judging. Pattern thinning programmes run for around 11 months. Compare photos every four weeks.
Can I colour my hair while it is shedding?
Gentle colour is usually fine, but it is best to postpone bleaching, perms and relaxers until the shedding has settled. If your hair is coloured, Hair Loss & Colors Shampoo Plus is an optional colour-friendly wash.
