What a trichologist does
Case history, examination, trichoscopy.
A trichologist evaluates hair and scalp concerns through a detailed case history, visual examination and, where appropriate, tools such as trichoscopy. The aim is to identify patterns, guide appropriate care and recognise when referral to a dermatologist or doctor is needed.
Trichology examines the biology of the hair follicle, the hair growth cycle, the structure of the hair fibre and the health of the scalp. It also considers why hair may shed, thin or break, and why symptoms such as flaking, itching or excess sebum can appear.
A professional assessment considers the pattern and duration of the symptoms, relevant health and lifestyle factors, hair-care practices and the visible condition of the scalp. Trichoscopy can provide a magnified view that helps document these signs and determine the most appropriate next step.
